11 Bands For People Who Want To Sell Their Soul To Rock ‘n’ Roll – pt.7

Today, we’re taking a look at a new genre that hasn’t been included in this series yet. But, of course, I had to. They are pioneers of their time. The peek of their success was during the early 1990s, nonetheless they are still very popular especially among teenagers nowadays. Their words and their typical sound have had an impact on many generations. Almost every young adult seems to feel understood by them. That’s why their music is still so important in the music world, even though they only recorded three studio albums. I think that’s impressive; let’s find out who it is!

Part 7/11: Sell Your Soul To Nirvana

The basics

Nirvana is an American grunge band formed in 1987. The most well-known member is probably lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain who is a huge icon in the grunge/rock scene. The studio record Nevermind that was released in 1991 marked their international breakthrough.

Their debut record Bleach was first released in 1989 and their 1993 album In Utero, sadly, turned out to be the band’s last album ever. The band’s career ended abruptly when Kurt Cobain was found dead in his house in 1994, after he commited suicide.

Who sould sign up for selling their soul?

I usually try to include a vast variety of genres in this part so you know the roots and influences of the band and it’s therefor easier to judge whether or not they might be for you. But I think grunge is a genre in itself that does not really fit in anywhere else. That’s of course why, when all these like-minded bands came up at the time, a new genre had to be created for them. Thinking about it now, it almost feels as if grunge was the last new thing we’ve seen in the music buisness within the last years. I feel like it’s easier to describe the sound by linking it to emotions, feelings or situations rather than linking it to other genres.

Still, I’ll try to give you at least a rough impression. Grunge is mainly a mixture of punk, hard rock, metal and often described as a subgenre of alternative rock. Now, whether or not that’s true, fans of Nickelback, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Jane’s Addiction, The Smashing Pumpkins or Oasis might also want to give Nirvana a try. Kurt Cobain himself was mainly influenced by The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Queen, The Stooges and Kiss.

If you’re a fan of any of the other big grunge bands, like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, The Melvins or Alice in Chains, you should of course also check out Nirvana if you haven’t yet.

In case you’re a Foo Fighters fan, check out Dave Grohl’s roots!

How I signed the contract & a short review

Anyone who loves or likes grunge and that time of anarchy in the 90s most likely already came across this band. Most of us go through a phase, at some point in our lives, where we feel lost, angry, rebellious, deeply misunderstood and want nothing more than to change the fucked up world we live in. If you’re in that phase now, go to Nirvana for comfort and you’re good. If you’re a person who feels a lot of weltschmerz (yes, that’s actually a German word) in general, Nirvana’s also for you.

I’m one of those people. Of course, with a mild interest in rock music, you at least heard of Smells Like Teen Spirit before and you’ve probably seen the Nevermind cover multiple times, because it’s usually all over the place. So, as always, you probably know that story by now, I came across a CD of them and bought it. And there went my soul…
